Does United Airlines Wi-Fi work over the ocean?

Short answer

It depends on which aircraft you get — United Airlines is running low-orbit and geostationary systems side by side.

Why, in one paragraph

On a retrofitted aircraft the ocean is a non-event. On the older geostationary fleet you are relying on a fixed satellite beam: it usually reaches mid-ocean on the busy corridors, but coverage thins on polar and remote South Pacific routings, and the delay makes calls awkward even when it works.

On United Airlines the older aircraft run Viasat and Panasonic, all of them geostationary — so an unconverted tail behaves like the slow column below. Where the rollout stands: Wi-Fi on most mainline aircraft. Free for MileagePlus members only on Starlink-equipped aircraft — the legacy Viasat/Panasonic/Gogo fleet is still paid. Starlink retrofit is the fastest in the industry: the regional fleet is done and mainline installs run daily, targeting ~1,000 aircraft by end of 2026.

The part nobody tells you

Coverage maps show where a satellite's beam reaches. They do not show how long the signal takes to get there and back, which is what actually decides whether a call is usable.
