Does Alaska Airlines Wi-Fi work over the ocean?

It depends on which aircraft you get — Alaska Airlines is running low-orbit and geostationary systems side by side.
Why, in one paragraph
On a retrofitted aircraft the ocean is a non-event. On the older geostationary fleet you are relying on a fixed satellite beam: it usually reaches mid-ocean on the busy corridors, but coverage thins on polar and remote South Pacific routings, and the delay makes calls awkward even when it works.
On Alaska Airlines the older aircraft run Intelsat, all of them geostationary — so an unconverted tail behaves like the slow column below. Where the rollout stands: Wi-Fi on most fleet. Starlink rollout in progress.

The part nobody tells you
Coverage maps show where a satellite's beam reaches. They do not show how long the signal takes to get there and back, which is what actually decides whether a call is usable.
This is why a geostationary connection can report a healthy speed and still make a video call unusable: bandwidth is fine, the delay is not. It is also why the fix is a different orbit, not a faster plan.
